From Avatars to Adaptive Simulations: How YU Global Is Using AI to Teach

YU Global sits at the cutting edge of AI-powered Online Learning. There is a fine line in the age of AI between hopping on the newest trend and strategically leveraging technology to produce impactful learning content. As the Educational Technology Developer for YU Global, it is my responsibility to help us walk that line with confidence.

From its inception, YU Global has not shied away from embracing generative AI. Our intention with AI is to enhance and expand the types of learning opportunities our learners have access to. The learner and their needs are the focal point. As we develop courses for student’s whose most formative educational experiences are inextricably linked to pandemic-era learning, there is little appreciation now for traditional, text-based courses. That does not mean we need to pander to shorter attention spans and lower reading levels. Rather, its an opportunity for strategic design choices which leverage modern technologies for superior content delivery. For us, that means using AI to rapidly create course content to meet learning gaps, generate AI Avatar videos to meet the changing needs of learners, and offering 24/7 specialized learning support through text and voiced activated Tutorbots.

I get to work with all our instructional designers, helping them integrate these technologies into their content design and delivery. Most recently, our efforts have turned towards gamification. As agentic coders like Codex and Claude Code improve and become more accessible for those without traditional coding experience, their utility to instructional designers grows immensely. Creating targeted interactives which can seamlessly integrate into online courses without breaking or changing the flow of learning is essential for meeting the needs of post-pandemic learners.

Sometimes this still looks like branching scenario activities which have been commonplace in online learning for decades. With AI chatbots, however, there is incredible potential to turn general scenarios into focused, adaptive simulations which reinforce learning and build critical thinking and communication skills simultaneously. In a course I developed recently, I used voice-activated chatbots to simulate stakeholder meetings, public speaking openings, and practice industry-specific networking, job interview, and conflict management conversations, each of these, responsive and tailored specifically to the learner. This kind of practice was simply not possible in asynchronous learning environments until now.

Many assume that using AI looks like dropping some PDFs into ChatGPT and telling it to write you a lesson. If only it were that easy! In pursuit of excellence, we have developed our own AI-powered course creation tool called Course Constructor which leverages the latest developments in knowledge retrieval and hallucination-defense, grounded in instructional design principles. We’ve gone beyond prompting into developing complex, multi-step AI-powered processes which prioritize human guidance and expertise.

This is what walking that fine line looks like in practice: not choosing between innovation and pedagogy, but insisting on both. Every avatar, every chatbot simulation, every line of code our agentic tools generate passes through the same filter — does this serve the learner in front of us in a way a static page of text never could? As AI keeps evolving, that question, not the technology itself, is what will keep steering where YU Global goes next.
